Chapter 22

Can you elaborate on the need for diversity?

Quick digression: now using indistinctly the pronouns I, me, you, she, he, we, us, as it no longer matters at this stage, we all have embarked on this and I’m too tired to dissociate and differentiate. Art in this chapter refers to all its traditional forms (painting, architecture, music, film etc.). End of digression.

Diversity stands at the crossroads of every values shaping The Blue Neon. It highlights one of a sentient’s core ability: curiosity. Curiosity, the utmost evolution skill, the main reason explaining your presence here, engaging with me. You decided to explore outside your known world, further accepting the plurality of life.

Pushing the boundaries shouldn’t only mean stepping out of your comfort zone from a physical perspective, but also acknowledging the immensity of options you can access - a very non-structuralist way of thinking, a discussion for another chapter perhaps. Don’t make everything a challenge to overcome, no need to define the exploration of new art as personal growth.

The Blue Neon appreciates the comfort that drives us all when it comes to art in general. It is demanding to be able to ignore what you have enjoyed for years, especially when you have limited free time. Nevertheless clinging to what you like negates the possibility to explore new horizons. Yet who would be brave enough to give a shot at an Indonesian artsy movie about two sisters arguing over the meaning of death (it doesn’t exist as far as I know) when you tend to prefer a Scandinavian thriller and only have a two-hour window for a movie this week. It feels like being stuck in a conundrum, right?

Invoke your memory. Do you remember the elation you felt while stumbling upon an unexpected artwork at an unexpected time, making it later a cornerstone of your personality. Would this have happened should you have remained in your little bubble, afraid? The diversity we support encourages you to open new horizons that would have probably remained unknown otherwise. Step into an uncharted territory full of hope. As counterintuitive as it appears, we believe diversity works better when positively enforced with an immediate access to its whole range, see the Wheel of Art.

Here we reject the concept of FOMO when applied to the realm of social events or ‘fun’ in general as this deprives us from spending time in our own thoughts. But, I would like to make an exception and consider it relevant when applied to the art world. Fear artistic novelty not revealing itself to you and hence not revealing yourself in return. Please do fear this. As dramatic as it sounds, do fear being stuck in an echo chamber.

The algorithms governing the online galleries - with their unlimited offer and indefinite scrolling, thus reinforcing the belief our tastes are exquisite - play a major role in this unintentional predicament most of us inflict on ourselves. The battle for your attention span is raging and turning you into a goldfish.

Resist, reject the status-quo, be afraid of the apathy, embrace your curiosity.

Yours Sincerely,

BLUE
