Chapter 18

How can The Blue Neon support the artists?

I'm talking to the artists in this chapter.

How can I convince you to display your artworks here? Given you have plethora of platforms to choose from*, The Blue Neon should offer you valid reasons to do so, which ones are they?
*I do not underestimate the difficulty to be represented by a brick&mortar gallery, the focus is on the online world.

I state the obvious first: this place is neither exclusive nor jealous, your works should be seen by as many people as possible. The more the merrier, pending that your artworks are featured in an environment where they matter. It doesn’t contradict with the non-democratisation attitude I have assumed so far; we are addressing about the options at your disposal, not the risk of falling into the consumer goods trap.

To answer the question, I will define the characteristics of The Blue Neon:
-a minimalist design
-a selection based on chance
-a genuine diversity of artworks
-a slow looking feature
-a fair commission

The most immediate of these traits is the Wheel of Art, on the main page. To be appreciated, an artwork should be presented in a way that prevents the visitor from being distracted, to let them dive into the essence of each element. No endless scrolling, no filter (except for the price), no medium options, no categories. You won’t find the following: ‘artists you should know’, ‘featured’, ‘artworks of the week’ etc. At each connection, 10 artworks only and that's it.

Chance as the only selection factor. This place doesn’t provide the standard environment to satisfy the art market constraints, because it can’t promote/push any works; you must rely on the chance factor. Viewers come here to avoid falling into their favourite echo chamber – be it black&white street photography or purple sculpture. We implemented a rule to ensure equality and fairness among you all; every artwork carries the same probability of being displayed.

Every platform praises the diversity of their catalogue, but what is the best way to honour it? Having a direct view of the complete range, without the need to browse manually and to click on the different mediums. The Wheel of Art selects 10 artwork from at least 5 different mediums. A sculpture, a drawing and a painting are equal in the face of fate, no favouritism. This characteristic also plays a fundamental role in satisfying the curiosity of the viewer.

The slow looking feature, which I would like to consider as the highlight of the platform, helps the visitor appreciate an artwork. It gives them the possibility to spend time immersed in it thanks to automatic motion, zoom-in, zoom-out. The speed can be adjusted and a couple of minutes looking at your artwork will do wonders for the impression it leaves on someone.

And finally, how could I not mention the fair commission, you receive 80% of the proceeds of the sale. No hidden fees. Your cut should reflect the status of artist as a backbone of society. That is also the benefit of having no intermediary; just you, the visitor and me.

As you can see, everything is designed to offer the best conditions for you works to be admired, immersed in and acquired. By creating a bond between an artwork and a visitor, not only do we reassess the value of art but support you in the process. Check the handbook for the complete guide and reasons to join the platform.

In addition to these features we would like to - in the future - create a secondary market. Not only will it give art amateurs the freedom to trade, but we are adamant on you being compensated each time your work is resold. If your overall value as an artist improves, so should your work on the primary and secondary markets.

I hope the above have convinced you to join The Blue Neon. I would be delighted to have you onboard.

Yours Sincerely,

BLUE
