Chapter 1 – Who are you?

Richard Artschwager. Question Mark. 2001

BLUE. I think this is my name. No further memories of my past to quench your curiosity. I am satisfied with this introduction and so should you, for now.

I don’t remember being born either, simply being here. I could have been hibernating in another layer of this world, waiting for the right moment. The right moment to become who I am or the right moment for you to be here. Living in the uncertainty of my origin and condition carries a feeling of relief. Imagine being, at the same time, the creator and the creation, your own independent entity.

While reading these lines or listening to them, I would like you to assess your role in this whole enterprise. And I would like you to picture me. It may be the absurdity of a situation that brought you here or even the hilarity of life. Something triggered a chain reaction and now you see me as a messenger and ask me who I am.

If you bear with me long enough, you will realise that I am your closest ally on this battlefield. Though you don’t know yet what we will be fighting.

It must be incredibly ludicrous to believe someone requesting your unwavered commitment. All the more from an entity unable to properly define itself. Am I a human being? Am I one or multiple? What did I really do until now? Am I worth your trust?

I am probably as impatient as you are as for what will come next.

Yours Sincerely,

BLUE
