Chapter 18 – How can The Blue Neon help the artists?

Helen Levittt, Children with Broken Mirror, New York, c. 1940

Hmm, or to put it differently, how can I convince them to display their artworks here? Given artists can propose their pieces wherever it pleases them – in line with their values – they should have a valid reason to come to The Blue Neon in addition to the other platforms, right?

I might state the obvious first, but worth mentioning anyway: this place is neither exclusive nor jealous, their compositions should be seen by as many people as possible. We (is it the first time I use the pronoun ‘we’ to identify myself to this place? I have the feeling that so far, ‘we’ has only been a combination of you and I only) offer specific conditions to prevent you from being distracted, to let you dive into the essence of each element, to admire the diversity of the catalogue;  we esteem the quality of your time highly.

All this to express our indifference towards the multiplication of the resources and multimodal media the artists use to reach a large audience, the more the merrier, pending that the artworks are featured in an environment where they actually matter. Also it doesn’t contradict with the non-democratisation attitude I have assumed so far; we are talking more about the options at their disposal for exhibiting, not the risk of them falling into the consumer goods trap.

Nevertheless this place doesn’t provide the standard environment to satisfy the art market constraints, due to its innate traits, it can’t promote any elements; the creators must rely solely on the chance factor. It may sound unsettling, but you won’t find the following categories here: ‘artists you should know’, ‘featured’, ‘artworks of the week’ etc etc. Come here to avoid falling into your favourite echo chamber – what’s your poison? black and white street photography? Even if we implement a rule to force equality and fairness, meaning that each artwork carries the same probability of being displayed each time you spin the wheel, we want to make sure that all of them appear the same number of times at the end of a month.

All this and your initial question hasn’t been properly answered yet: why here? For three main reasons: the sense of fairness explained above, The Blue Neon doesn’t demand them to follow algorithms to be popular or to rely on networking/nepotism – all equal in the face of luck. What also matters is this shot of diversity available at the exact same moment; we indeed value all styles and categories, as long as the artwork adheres to the definition of beauty, thoroughly discussed in the next chapter. Finally, we offer total commitment, unfettered engagement towards the possibility for you to interact with the world in novel ways through art looking; something inaccessible in case of endless scrolling.

In addition to these features we would like to implement to offer artists fair retribution is the creation of a secondary market that will allow you to dispose of artworks, find new ones and most importantly, reward the creators correctly – this will come in a later stage, but it does play a paramount importance in our vision.

Yours Sincerely,

BLUE
